Dr. Ioannis (Ion) Pagkalos is a Computer Scientist and an Associate Professor at the International Hellenic University,  teaching Computer science, e-Health & Nutrition Informatics at the School of Health Sciences (Department of Nutritional Sciences & Dietetics).

He is a senior researcher with over 15 years of experience in designing, implementing and managing IT solutions for more than 30 EU- and state-funded research projects and large-scale cross-border pilots in the areas of e-Health, e-Government and Nutrition Informatics (e.g. WHO COSI, JANPA, epSOS, PROTEIN, BigO, e-SENS, e-CODEX, EXEC, CEF Health etc.). He is also the founder and team leader of the Nutrition Information Systems Laboratory (NISLAB).

His current research interests include the applications (and implications) of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in interdisciplinary spaces, with a particular interest in:

  • Nutrition Information Systems (Software, Databases)
  • Classic and Semantic Web Technologies (Web Apps, Ontologies, Data Science)
  • e-Health (EHR, cross-border interoperability)
  • e-Government (digitisation, provenance, transport, reliability, testing)
  • ICT-assisted Energy Intake and Physical activity assessment (e.g. wearable sensors)
  • Online Social Networks and novel forms of digital health interventions
